Response to Fred Thompson Abortion
November 26, 2007On Fox News Sunday [11/25/07], Sen. Fred Thompson claimed that Gov. Huckabee "supported the same thing that I've been saying as late as last year, leave [abortion] up to that states, essentially." This is simply not true. Unlike Thompson, Gov. Huckabee's position on abortion respects both federalism and the sanctity of human life. Gov. Huckabee agrees with Thompson that life begins at conception and that abortion is the taking of human life. He also agrees with Thompson that Roe v. Wade is based on an illegitimate application of the Constitution and that the federal government has no right to allow or prohibit abortion. Where they differ is that Thompson supports a "pro-choice" position for the individual states: He does not support the Human Life Amendment and is content to let the states authorize the destruction of innocent human life. In contrast, Gov. Huckabee supports a constitutional amendment that would be proposed by Congress and ratified by the state legislatures. The Tenth Amendment makes explicit the notion that the federal government is limited only to the powers granted in the Constitution. For this reason, Gov. Huckabee believes that a constitutional amendment is necessary to ensure that every human being, from the moment of conception to natural death, is not denied equal protection of the law. Gov. Huckabee has always supported passage of a constitutional amendment to protect the right to life. His convictions regarding the sanctity of life have always been clear and consistent, without equivocation or wavering. Regrettably, the same cannot be said of Sen. Thompson.

Huckabee on Driver's Licenses for Illegal Immigrants
November 29, 2007
Governor Huckabee opposes giving driver's licenses to illegals and supports legislation to prevent states from doing so. However, several opposition blogs are attempting to make this claim by misrepresenting a proposed textual addition to the licensing requirements by the AR House of Representatives. The purpose of Act 1812 of 2001 was to clarify what documents were required to obtain a license. The Act would not have allow ed immigrants here illegally to obtain a license. Act 1812 would have denied an initial application or renewal for an Arkansas driver license to anyone who could not provide two of the following documents: U. S. birth certificate; U. S. Visa; Social Security Card; photo document from INS; military or military dependent photograph identification; U. S. Passport; Naturalization Certificate; or any other document prescribed by the Department of Finance and Administration. The amendment also required that this list of documents be posted in each revenue office in the state. Because this amendment did not pass the House, Act 1812 did not amend Arkansas Code and http://www.arkleg.state.ar.us/ftproot/acts/2001/htm/act744.pdf. Currently, the list of documents is not outlined in the state code on Licensing Requirements, nor is there a requirement for the documents to be posted in state revenue offices.

Endorsement From Eagle Forum
A Letter From Rick Calhoun, Former Chairman of the Arkansas Eagle Forum
November 18, 2007
Dear Conservative Friends: Let me go on record as supporting Mike Huckabee for President of the United States. Now is the time for Christian conservatives to unite behind the only candidate in the upcoming presidential contest who shares our values and vision for America. As a former Chairman and board member of Eagle Forum of Arkansas, I authored many newsletters that stated: "Eagle Forum of Arkansas embraces a set of values based on Christian principle and Biblical authority. These values must always serve as our guide." These ideals have delivered political success and blessed evangelicals with influence in national politics. Have we forgotten the Reagan Revolution that changed the course of America? Former Governor Huckabee shares the values that have always guided Christian conservatives. I am disappointed by attacks launched against Governor Huckabee by a few members of the evangelical community. Mike Huckabee is our best hope to continue the progress the Christian community has made in recent years. His record is solid on the issues we as Christian conservatives are called to uphold. His record on social issues while Governor of Arkansas speaks for itself. But he is also more than pro-life and pro-family. He worked to implement accountability and efficiency in government and understands the link between economic growth and lower taxes. I have always admired, and certainly learned from, the way Governor Huckabee treats others and the respect he shows for all - Republican and Democrat alike. I have witnessed first hand his unique ability to work with everyone and the Christian attitude he displays when dealing with those with whom he disagrees. We will never change the hearts and minds of America with hateful remarks or disparaging judgments, but rather by lifting up those Godly principles that we know to be true. Politics is a natural extension of society's values and government will always be a reflection of our beliefs - that is why we need to elect as President a man who shares our commitment to traditional values. It's time for Christian conservatives to unite behind Mike Huckabee - the only candidate shown to be consistent with the values of the Christian community. Faithfully yours, Patrick "Rick" Calhoun

Ethics - Huckabee
November 09, 2007
The Arkansas Ethics Commission created under the reign of Bill Clinton, has been misused as a weapon against Republicans. Governor Huckabee has been unfairly attacked regarding his ethics history while Governor of Arkansas. The overwhelming majority of the complaints were filed in the midst of one of Governor Huckabee's campaigns, and filed by Democrats to a commission made up of a vast majority of Democrats. The end result of those complaints was a series of negative headlines-and NOTHING else. Here are the facts: The overwhelming majority of ethics complaints filed against Governor Huckabee in the state of Arkansas were regularly dismissed and / or proven to be frivolous. It is important to note that many of these complaints were either filed by a member of the Arkansas media with his own agenda or were filed by a Democrat activist using the so-called reporter's story as the basis for the complaint. The REAL story is that in the end, despite the many attempts, the only finding of an illegal gift was reversed on appeal.

Wayne Dumond Story
Truth Squad: Wayne Dumond Story
November 09, 2007
It has been reported that Governor Huckabee released, pardoned, or granted parole to convicted rapist Wayne Dumond. That is not true. It's interesting that Wayne Dumond's name only surfaces during an election year for Governor Huckabee. In 2002, his Democrat opponent in the midst of the general election made a political issue out the entire thing. Arkansas voters didn't buy this false attack from the Democrat in 2002 and re-elected Governor Huckabee to another term as Governor of Arkansas. Here are the facts of the Dumond case: Governor Jim Guy Tucker gave executive clemency to Wayne DuMond, and commuted his sentence to 39.5 years. This action made Wayne DuMond immediately eligible for parole. The parole board was made up entirely of Democrats appointed by Democrat Governors Bill Clinton and Jim Guy Tucker (who was later convicted on federal charges and removed from office). Not one member of the board was appointed by Huckabee. Governor Huckabee never took action in the DuMond case that made him parole eligible. Governor Huckabee either denied Wayne DuMond's clemency request, or took no action (which is the same as a denial) on four separate occasions. Governor Huckabee did not parole Wayne Dumond. Governor Huckabee had no authority to do that. Governors in Arkansas don't grant parole-the parole board does. The fact remains that Governor Huckabee didn't commutate, pardon, parole or grant any form of clemency to Wayne DuMond.

Governor Huckabee never supported benefits for illegal immigrants. In Arkansas, illegal immigrants do not receive welfare benefits or food stamps. Governor Huckabee has always, and will always be supportive of the laws and regulations of the country. It has also been said that Mike Huckabee was in favor of providing college scholarships for illegal immigrants while he was Governor.
The governor only supported the measure that applied to those who met the academic qualifications and applied for legal citizenship. The measure didn't pass. Governor Huckabee stressed that any student would simply be treated as any other graduate of an Arkansas High School, and not given any special consideration. Critics say that Governor Huckabee's motives behind opening a Mexican consulate office in Little Rock was to court illegals to come work in Arkansas.
The Mexican consulate provided Arkansas businesses with access to Mexico and opportunities to expand their markets, and would help further ensure that immigrants from Mexico are legal and better able to secure legal documentation. At the same time, the office would open up opportunities for Mexican investors to invest money with Arkansas partners, which would help create more jobs in the state.
